Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Types of Hiking Pants PDF Print E-mail

Choosing the right clothes for your outdoor activities is important. It can make or break your outdoor adventure. Clothes for outdoors should be different from the ordinary clothing. Outdoor clothes play a more important role – to protect you from any harsh conditions you might meet while outside.

One outdoor clothing that should be given more importance is hiking pants. Hiking pants help in maintaining your thermal equilibrium, or the amount of heat your body produces. Hiking pants also protect you against animal bites, and getting scratched or scraped by branches or rough objects in your path.

You might have no idea about this, but there are different types of hiking pants. Each one has a different purpose from the another. Check the list below and see their advantages and disadvantages:

Long Hiking Pants

Long hiking pants are mostly meant for use in combination with normal or short thermal underwear hiking pants. You will normally see these kinds of hiking pants in shops.

Long hiking pants often combine the multiple functions of the three-layer system in one light fabric. These hiking pants are mostly breathable and water- and wind-resistant. In addition, many of these hiking pants come with a convenient zipper feature, allowing you to remove the bottoms so you can wear them as shorts. This type of hiking pants could be considered suitable for three seasons.

Short and Long (Thermal) Underwear Hiking Pants

Experts recommended following a three-layer system in choosing your hiking pants. The first layer being the one responsible for keeping you dry – that is absorbing the sweat from your body. The outer layer is the one that will protect you from outside harmful factors.

The short and long (thermal) underwear hiking pants serve as your first layer of clothing. They keep the moisture away from your skin, and comfortable enough not to cause chafing on your delicate skin. These hiking pants come in boxer shorts length or full length.

Tights Hiking Pants

The purpose of these tights hiking pants is the same as that of the long thermal underwear. They give protection as a first layer to your legs. They have the same moisture-extracting properties.

However, tights hiking pants have another feature that is far more advanced and sophisticated. These pants can target areas that help support key muscle groups and help prevent lactic acid buildup. With that, they not only provide you thermal equilibrium, but prevent you from experiencing muscle soreness caused by lactic acid buildup as well.

So, next time you go on a hiking adventure, don’t forget your hiking pants. They are the clothing that you can never do without.

Different Places to Visit when Doing California Hiking On the Northern Coast PDF Print E-mail

If you are an avid hiker, you should not miss hiking on the Northern Coast of California. This part of the state has lots of hiking options for you. As we know, California has many beautiful places for hiking enthusiasts to visit. Among them are the Point Reyes National Seashore, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Yosemite Falls, Yosemite National Park, John Muir National Historic Site, and many more. But for a start, let’s hike on the Northern Coast.

California hiking some 20 miles north of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge will give you an idea of a California you never knew existed. Following the Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1), meander past pumpkin patches, Christmas tree farms, grazing horses, and towns right out of the 1950s and at the end of it all are ancient redwood forests, rugged coastlines, picturesque vineyards, and charming country inns.

Your first stop in your California hiking trip is in a town nestled in a redwood forest near the Russian River. It’s Occidental town, which was once a lumber and railroad center. Today, it is known for its family-style Italian restaurants.  Here, you will get a chance to see whales and sportfish at Bodega Bay. You can also check the wineries along the Russian River Wine Road. Don’t forget to stop by the Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve too.

After Occidental, keep your eyes open because the next town is one of those blink-your-eyes-and-you-miss-it towns. Perched high on a cliff overlooking a mile of picturesque coastline along Route 1, Elk is 20 miles south of Mendocino. Almost a century ago, Elk was a bustling port with a thriving lumber industry and a population of 2,000.

In this town, you can find migrating whales which can be spotted off the coast in December when they head south, and in the early spring when they head north with their calves. You can also have horseback riding, whale-watching boat trips or a picnic lunch.  Hiking through the fifteen wineries in Elk is something you should not missed.

Next stop on your California hiking is Mendocino. This picturesque bluff-top village is surrounded on three sides by rugged coastline. Mendocino is known for its ultra-unique architecture, reflecting the town’s roots (it’s early settlers were from New England).

Mendocino has the distinction of having the prettiest main streets in America. Every shop in the four-block area has an ocean view. These shops are the Book Loft with a good selection of books, Mendocino Art Center Showcase Gallery featuring the work of local artists and crafters, Mendocino Chocolate Co. famous for its handmade truffles, and several more.

And do you know that Mendocino is popular among filmmakers? Its beautiful view has been the setting of several films starting in the silent era film.  To date, there are more than 50 films that have been shot here, including six that have received various Academy Awards, including – Johnny Belinda (1948), East of Eden (1955), and The Summer of ’42 (1971).

Hiking on the Northern Coast of California has never had this many choices. If you are adventurous, you can visit more places that some hikers have never been to. And after your Northern California hike, don’t forget to hike in some other popular places in California for that total hiking adventure.

Have a Comfortable Hiking Adventure – Wear Hiking Shorts PDF Print E-mail

Going hiking? You must have already planned all the necessary things to bring. What about hiking apparel? Have you decided on what to wear? Don’t be too conscious on what to wear on your hiking adventure. It is not about making a fashion statement, since there are only birds and trees who can see you. It’s more about being comfortable.

But often, when talking about hiking apparel, people only think about what goes to the head and what goes to the feet, and hardly anyone thinks about what they ought to cover their bodies with. And to think that, unless you want to go Tarzan when you go hiking, the clothes you actually wear on your body are just about as important as your shoes and head wear.

In this article, we are going to discuss the reasons why wearing hiking shorts is preferred by most sunny-day hikers. Take note that what you will wear has to depend on the kind of weather out there. You can’t wear hiking shorts when it’s cold and rainy. Jeans are recommended for that, since they’re tough and reasonably warm. During spring or fall, jeans are still fine, but you can wear hiking shorts too. But if it’s going to be a hot day, do yourself a favor by wearing hiking shorts.

As you already know the reasons, hiking shorts provide cool comfort on hot, sunny days, in contrast to jeans where they tend to be uncomfortable as the day wears on. You can’t wear jeans if the hiking will take the whole day, since it will become awfully hot and uncomfortable as the temperature changes.

So, as a solution, bring two pairs of garments for the lower body – a pair of pants and a pair of hiking shorts. It could work, but it can be quite a hassle as well. If you want a picture, just try to imagine yourself getting into a pair of hiking shorts from jeans while standing on one foot in the forest. Plus, you don’t want your hiking partners or whoever else is on the trail to see you there in your underwear, so you have to change into your hiking shorts real fast.

Here’s another solution. If you are not sure what’s the weather is going to be, bring along with you a pair of cargo pants with removable legs instead of bringing both jeans and hiking shorts. With a pair of cargo pants with removable legs, you can start the day wearing hiking shorts, then when the climate changes, you can just re-attach the legs back to your hiking shorts so you’ll be wearing long pants or vice versa.

Wearing hiking shorts will improve the hiking experience by keeping you cool and comfortable as you trudge on the trail. But, as mentioned earlier, the weather can change. What started as a perfect morning for hiking shorts can change into a rainy afternoon. That’s why it is important to be ready with hiking apparel that will suit any weather..

The Importance of Wearing the Right Hiking Clothes PDF Print E-mail

Choosing the right hiking clothes will contribute a lot to the outcome of your hiking adventure. Though hiking clothes have the same basic purpose as normal daily clothing, it has an additional goal – that is to protect your body from harsh weather, terrain conditions, and other unexpected situations you may encounter while outdoors.

For this reason you should choose your hiking clothes with utmost care. This doesn’t mean that you’ll bring your whole closet. The general rule of traveling light should still be followed. Just like hiking boots, hiking tents, and all other gear, weight and bulk are serious considerations when it comes to hiking clothes.

To give you amore clear understanding of the purpose of hiking clothes and why it is necessary to wear the appropriate ones, read the following:

Protection and Padding

One important aspect of your hiking clothes is its ability to provide you with protection from environmental factors other than moisture, through padding. While the human skin is an absolute marvel, it is not very strong. It can easily get cut by anything that’s sharp or moving at high velocity. It could get bruised, dried, and break.

The outdoors possesses a lot more danger to our precious skin than our everyday city surroundings. Thus, a lot of padding and reinforced materials, through the wearing of hiking clothes, is used to protect you from the possible damage your skin might undergo because of rough terrain or chaffing of equipment.

Maintaining your Thermal Equilibrium

People often refer to hiking clothes like sweaters and jackets as “warm clothing” when actually, the purpose of hiking clothes like these is not to increase your body temperature. What they do instead is to help you keep and maintain a thermal equilibrium.

What is a thermal equilibrium? The term simply means that your body is generating as much heat as you are loosing. That way, your body does not have to produce extra heat or lose it through sweating. Producing extra heat or sweat can be very taxing on your body, draining your total energy. By wearing hiking clothes that help maintain your thermal equilibrium, you thus save your body’s energy, to last you for the entire trek.

Keeping you Dry

This is an obvious purpose of hiking clothes. If your skin is dry, your body is able to preserve more of its heat. Not only that, dry skin increases general comfort. Face it, no one wants to feel all sweaty all the time.

Hiking clothes that help keep you dry have two parts. First, it should protect you from outside moisture. Your hiking clothes should be able to protect you from rain, snow, and other possible sources of water. Second is the ability to protect you from body moisture. Your hiking clothes should move body moisture (sweat) away from your body.

To serve both these purposes, your hiking clothes should be waterproof, and at the same time be breathable. This combination of protecting you from outside moisture and keeping your body moisture away from your skin might be difficult to attain. But you’ll find that having this kind of hiking clothes will give you lots of benefits and protection. Hiking should be fun as well as a safe adventure.
